StopTrik 2021 Lodz Students Jury Award in International Competition Programme: Stop Motion Animation

Bestia / Zver
Hugo Covarrubias (TREBOL 3)
2021, CHL, 15'45''

Based on true events, the film explores the life of a secret police agent during the military dictatorship in Chile. Her relationship with her dog, her body, her fears and frustrations reveals a grim fracture of her mind and of the country.

Jury’s Statement:

For a thoroughly thought-out vision of the presented reality, and precision in executing this idea. For courage and art-craft in the use of a conscious deconstruction of an intrafilmic time - from explorations of various techniques which lead to the subjectification of the image, through skillful exploitation of film genre conventions. Overall, this film reveals a fascinating picture of a collective trauma located within an intimate story.

StopTrik 2021 Lodz Students Jury Special Mention

Three Jumps to Happiness / Trzy Skoki do Szczęścia / Trije skoki do sreče
Artur Hanaj (PWSFTviT Lodz Film School)
2020, POL, 12'

A black comedy describing one evening in the lives of several animals. A couple of turtles, a bear and a monkey want to find their will to consciously manage their life. Qualified by O!PLA Festival.

Jury’s statement:

For referring with a rich use of dark humor to the traditions of animal allegory in folktales. For opening the discussions that are far from moralistical pedagogics.

Chloé Van Herzeele
Anne-Sophie Girault, Clémence Bouchereau (Autoproduction)
2019, FRA, 16'47''

Chloé, an old lady, organizes screenings in an underground space. She shows a journalist her galleries where her collection of silver films is stored. Through the descent, we dive into her altered world.

Jury' Statement:

For a brilliant use of sand animation in a story of nostalgia and cinephilia. For skilfully approaching a theme of "mortality" - in the context of a human life as well as in the context of the medium which, even if its function is to "freeze the time", it is not indifferent to the years passing.

This is Only Getting Worse / Hahara haze rak mamshich ligdol (החרא הזה רק ממשיך לגדול) / Samo še huje bo
Eran Luzon, Michael Negari (Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design)
2020, ISR, 7'36''

Jerusalem is divided by a mysterious crack, pulling any metal object into it. Revital, a woman in advanced pregnancy, is trying to get to the crack in order to kill herself and the baby she carries.

Jury's Statement:

For an unconventional synthesis of stop motion animation and live-action cinematography. For a novelty in creating an image of a dystopian world engaged in a net structure of political divisions.
