StopTrik MFF predstavlja: Estonska animacija z lutkami

Trajanje: 66’

StopTrik IFF Presents: Estonian Puppet Animation

You are cordialy invited to join us on a StopTrik IFF pre-event focused on Estonian puppet animation!

Runtime: 66'

“Nuku” in Estonian means “puppet” therefore the name of the famous production studio Nukufilm simply designates Tallinn’s filmmakers’ major field of interest. Studio, formed in 1993 on the basis of former Tallinnfilmstudio established in 1957, remains one of the most intriguing and worldwide influential center of animated film.

"Auteur-films will never bring back their expenses, but if you cannot do good auteur-films, you can't do good commercial films either" once said Arvo Nuut, an artistic director of the studio. The core of Nukufilm’s production strategy is a unique collective engagement and passion for art. The authors of Nukufilm shift in their functions while participating and collaborating in various productions as directors, writers, animators or set designers. Surreal sensitivity of Nukufilm realizations contributes to the massive popularity of animation art in Estonia, an exceptional phenomena in the landscape of the Eastern European cinematographies. Absurd film visions unveil in the eyes of the curious, defenceless and enchanted viewer.

Although a lot of Nukufilm’s authors employ in their works different digital and live-action means of expression, majority of Studio’s production could be named as a traditional puppet film. But the term “traditional” doesn’t seem adequate in case of histories driven by abstract and absurd quasi-logical narrations. Visual rhythm of images representing equally peculiar as typical figures constructs the plots focused on material transformations achieved by corporeal loses and gaining, cross-dressing, set or bodies disintegration.

The selection of 4 films produced in Nukufilm is complemented by "Fly Mill" directed by Anu-Laura Tuttelberg, one of the most talented puppet film artist of young Estonian generation. Film created as a student work at the Estonian Art Academy anticipates Tuttelberg's interest in twisted storytelling and sophisticated puppetry art, the artistic features that she pursues further in following works realized under the label of Nukufilm.
