As recent years have seen numerous accusations of plagiarism against pop icons – some blatant, some barely noticeable – director Marion Foucart and visual designer and animator Milanka Fabjančič delved into the web animated series Pastish to examine the process of musical creation and, in particular, to question the notion of originality in music.
Pastish is a series that was written like a poem, developed through associations and connections between melody, rhythm, sound, musical genre, era, and personal memory. Milanka Fabjančič’s drawing creates a "metaphysical machine"that "arranges the map of inspiration, imagination, and originality within the realm of collective creative consciousness." Drawing inspiration from the fresh naivety of Monty Python's collage animations, Fabjančič's animation follows the spoken text non-linearly and responds to the mentioned musical examples. Her method of animation in Pastish, she says, "is not meant to be merely illustrative but is inspired by real anecdotes, eras, moods, and the presented characters and their music," which she described with remarkably diverse, yet intrinsically intertwined stylistic switching.
Marion Foucart
was born in Paris in 1981. She holds a Master's degree from the UFR Médiation Culturelle et Communication, Paris, where her research focused on the festival and its cultural policies. She took her first steps in the recording industry at Warner Music France as a marketing assistant, then discovered the world of specialized written press within Les Inrocks, before becoming the pen and brains behind the music chronicles of the show Télématin on national TV France 2 for about fifteen years. She's also a graduate musician and violinist, and what she loves above all is rummaging through the dusty disc tray of record stores to find a rare pearl, unearth an improbable sample on the Whosampled community site, (make) discover, decipher, share. Marion is also a composer in her spare time, has lived in Slovenia for several years now and knows absolutely nothing about Yugoslav pop from the 1980s.
Milanka Fabijančič
born in Ljubljana in 1981, is an academic painter and self-employed in culture as an illustrator. In recent years, she has been most active in the field of original animation (Liliana 2019, Octopus Banana Hotchpotch 2023, Pastish series - Season 1 in 2022, Season 2 in 2024), youth book illustration, and teaching at the University of Nova Gorica School of Arts (Storyboarding) and the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana (Illustration and Color Studies). For the animated film Liliana she received, among others, the Vesna Award for Best Animated Film at the Festival of Slovenian Film in 2019, and the Innovation in Animation Film Award at the International Filmmaker Festival of New York (IFFNY) in 2021. The web series Pastish was awarded with the Best Web Series of the Year 2023 award at the MARSEILLE WEB FEST festival.
